And that Willy would go to his boss's son , and demand to be given a place in the office of New York . They would celebrate that night at dinner . But Biff could not get the loan and willy is also frustrated .
- Biff forced himself and Willy to acknowledge that Biff had been only a clerk in a store , not a salesman ; that Biff had been jailed in Kansas City for stealing ; that Happy was not assistant manager but a clerk and philandering woman-chasing bum and that Willy had never been successful and never would be .

THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSONALITY

- Miller's heroes are involved in a straggle which caused by either his acceptance or his rejection of an image of himself . This image grows out of the values of society . That society may be as wide as the contemporary America that is formed Willy Loman in Death Of A Salesman .
- Here , the conflict is the main point and the image must be effected by the society . So , the question of identity appears clearly with Biff not with his father because if he knows this question and ask it to himself , he will not face this problem but he does not do , thus , he commits suicide and has been blind sometimes .
- On the other hand , Biff knows the errors of his society and himself , then he begins facing them leaving all his father's teachings .
- Willy spends the whole play vacillating between tow dreams : his idealistic wish for success and worldly gain , and conscious desire reflects his hesitating character and causes his destruction when he commits suicide at the end of the play .
- Willy has a contradictory personality having confused feelings and varied imaginations . He is frequently haunted by the ghost of the past and lives under the illusion that he invents the image that he is a successful tradesman .

- After Biff saw his father with a mistress , they escaped from each other . Biff lost faith in his example in life , his father , and lost hope in life .

- His inability to escape the past prevents him from dealing with his present .
- Biff is going to tell his father about his failure . This is the first time Biff starts to see the reality of his life . He was blind ; he could not see how his life was full of mistakes . 27 - The woman ( mistress ) is a figure from Willy's past .
- Willy wants someone to listen to him . His sons have deserted him when he was in great need of them . he escapes to the past . He did not pass the examination of truth . Willy tells his sons that he has failed in life . The actual speech takes place between Willy and Biff . The son faces his father with the fact that he is a failure ; he is not successful . Willy is connected to the standard ideals , the standard commercial products and even the standard language .
- Miller says that competition is theft . Biff is the particular expontent of this view . Biff steals a football , a box of basketballs , asuit of clothes , and , less deliberately , a fountain pen . Happy shows his comptitive spirit through many sexual advantures . She is the reason of the problem between Willy and Biff , That is because Biff saw his father with this woman in a hotle when Willy was in Boston . Biff surprised his father with his coming into the room . When Biff discovers the existence of the woman , Willy tries to get rid of her and he says to Biff that she is a " buyer and they are painting her room " but Biff doesn't believe him , and he accuses Willy of being ' fake '.
