عبير Thank you for issuing this nice topic, and also many thanks to
Huda who has inspired you.
Unfortunately, many people consider "Heart" and "Mind" as two poles, while in fact they are NOT so. They think that one 'should' be 'in favour' of either the heart or the mind. Of course what is meant by 'Heart' and 'Mind' is "feelings" and "logic". Here let me again refer to the theory of Yin-Yang,
because this theory explains the relation between 'heart' and 'mind'. As I mentioned in my topic of Literary Quotations,
this theory says that everything in this universe exists in relation to something else. The symbol of this theory consists of a circle, and this circle is divided into two halves: Black and White; Yang = White, Yin = Black. The matter does NOT end with this; inside the white half there is a small black circle, and inside the black half there is a small white circle. Now what is meant by this is that black and while are not opposites as most people think; but rather black and white, with what they represent,
complete each other
to form the whole circle which represents anything
in its whole. The circle also says that nothing is
completely Yin or
completely Yang, completely white or completely black,
completely 'Heart' or 'completely 'Mind', through the existence of the small circles in the opposite part of their colours. This theory says that some people
tend to be 'yin' and others to be 'Yang'; but they are
never completely Yin or completely Yang. In a 'Yang person', the dominant characteristics are the characteristics of the Yang, but he/she has also Yin characteristics. This is my own understanding of the theory, and these are my own words.
Now you may be asking yourselves that our topic is about "the Heart and Mind", not about "Yin-Yang"; what is the relation between "heart and mind topic" and "Yin-Yang theory"? In fact, discussing the Yin-Yang theory is but discussing the relation between heart and mind. The relation between Heart and Mind is like that of Yin and Yang: Yang represents Mind and Yin represents Heart.
Just apply what I mentioned about the theory of Yin-Yang to Heart and Mind, and you will understand this relation exactly. Some people
tend to be "in favour" of Mind; this does not mean in anyway that they do not possess some characteristics of those who are "in favour" of Heart; and vice versa.
As for me, I'm 'in favour' of mind, although I think that 'Heart and Mind" dominate my personality
equally. I sometimes
suppress my 'feelings' in order not to cause me much sadness. When I like to say or do something and I know this is against logic, I try to convince myself that this is just a
façade and not my true feeling or desire. By doing so I allow my mind to control my personality. When my "Heart" and my "Mind" go together I become the happiest person on the earth, of course this is very very rare
. In accordance to the previous 'facts', a person who is controlled by his mind tends to live a sad life, because they're preventing themselves from living their own desires, wishes and feelings. For to follow your heart is to live your own feelings. Here I remember a nice quote that was used by a member of art-en as her signature: "
Life is a tragedy to those who think, a comedy to those who feel."
I'm soooooooo sorry for this SHORT reply. I hope that you will not get bored when you read it.
Abeer, do not forget to post your own opinion as well
By the way, your new signature is marvelous and has to do with this topic. For what happens
'in us' represents "Heart", and what happens
'to us' represents "Mind". Don't you think so? So, you are 'in favour' of Heart because you're saying that what happens 'in us'
is more important, am I right ??
