Characteristics of Modern Literature:
1. Rejection of conventional attitudes and views.
2. An unprecedented number of literary movements (or "-isms")
3. Innovation: the use of new techniques and new modes of writing (e.g. "free verse" and the "stream of consciousness")
4. The artist's self-consciousness about questions of literary form and structure.
5. Interest in remote cultures and ethnic groups and minorities
6. Freer expression in sexual and political matters.
7. Interest in psychological matters.
8. Interest in gender issues.
9. A growing sense of alienation. The character belongs to a "lost generation" (Gertrude Stein), suffers from a "dissociation of sensibility" (T. S. Eliot), and has "a Dream deferred" (Langston Hughes).
10. General concern about technology and science (regardless of whether the attitude revealed is negative or positive).
11. Revolt against literary tradition: Generic innovation: the short story, the one-act play, the antinovel, etc.
12. A general preference for short literary forms over long ones: the short short short story, the relative absence of epic poetry.

بالنسبة للأخيرة درسناها هي السنة . . و هي فعلا قصيدة رائعة جدا و الدكتور لخصها بالأفكار التالية :
"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1915) by T. S. Eliot
1-The original title of the poem was "Prufrock among Women"
2- The title is anticlimactic
3-The name "Prufrock" is feminine and indicates the character's weakness.
4-The title is also ironic because the "love song" is in fact never sung.
5- The epigraph of the poem is taken from Dante's Divine Comedy. A sinner in hell is telling someone that he will reveal his sins because there is no chance that the listener will return to earth and disclose it to the living. This idea is paralleled in Prufrock's safe revelation of his secrets to the reader, who" will definitely not meet the characters in Prufrock's world and tell them about these secrets. The news that the hero will descend downwards through the nine levels of hell reflects the descending and thus worsening states of Prufrock's mind (skyline to the sea floor). He is descending into his own hell and he brings the reader with him The poem begins with an image of a patient. This indicates Prufrock's own sick mind and mental disturbance. The image of a sedated patient reflects Prufrock's paralysis.
6- The poem is cast in the form of a monologue. This shows:
A. The theme of alienation
B. Prufrock's weakness
C. Absence of communication
7- The "I" in the poem = Prufrock
8- The you in the poem = the reader
9- The society portrayed is that of Boston at the turn of the century.
10- Prufrock as a tragic figure: he is defeated by his own over hesitation and despair.
11- The use of juxtaposition: the epigraph and Prufrock's situation.
12- Overeducation as an alienating agent: Prufrock's dedication to education has isolated him from society.
13- The refrain indicates Prufrock's obsession with women and art. It also indicates his entrapment in the present tense.
14- The line "Streets that follow like a tedious argument" shows the influence of French Symbolism on Eliot.
15- The fog is compared to a cat.
16- "There will be time" shows Prufrock's wishful thinking.
