Auxiliary verbs in questions
To form question in English we normally need an auxiliary verb. Use one of the auxiliary verbs below to reconstruct the questions you have just answered
are.... is.... do.... does ....have ....has ....was.... were ....did

Different uses of auxiliary verbs
Auxiliary verbs often emphasise things, show interest or avoid repetition. If they are used alone, remember they must agree with the tense and person of the main sentence

A. Why didn't you tell me you were going to be late
B.I did tell you, but you never listen to me sometimes
A.I don't think you want to go
B.I do want to go, but my father won't let me
In questions.2
A.Short questions
You can show interest in what someone has said by responding with a short question using an auxiliary verb
A.My sister has just had a new baby
!B.Has she? How nice
A I didn't enjoy the movie at all
?B.Didn't you
Notice here that positive questions are used with positive sentences, and negative questions with negative sentences
B.Question tags
A question tag can be used at the end of a statement to encourage the listener to respond
Here negative questions are used with positive sentences and positive questions with negative sentences
?A. He's adorable, isn't he
?A. You haven't invited him, have you
If there is no doubt about the statement, the voice goes down
If there is an element of doubt the voice goes up
To avoid repetition.3
We also use auxiliary verbs to avoid repeating whole phrases
(A. Sally enjoys mountaineering, but her husband doesn't (= enjoy mountaineering
(A. Peter hasn't been able to memorise the poem, but all the other students have. (= been able to memorise the poem
This is common in answers to YES/NO questions
?A. Have you decided which dress to buy yet
B.No, I haven't . I need to decide on the shoes as well
Read the conversation and complete the gaps with phrases using auxiliaries
