[
english]What is the basic difference between vowels and consonants؟
Consonants are sounds whose production requires some kind of blockage of the airstream at some point in the vocal tract. This closure of the airflow is either complete as is the case in plosives ( p-t -k ) or partial as is the case in fricatives .
Friction occurs when two articulators are in gentle touch with each other. When the
lower lip touches the
upper front teeth gently, two consonants are produced ( f- v). The first is voiceless and the second is voiced.
Vowels , on the other hand, are sounds whose production does not require any obstruction of the air at any point in the vocal tract.
The airstream moves freely from the larynx until it goes out of the mouth. All vowels are voiced.
 This is self-evident. Try prducing a long continuous I: I: I: I:I:I:I:I:I:I:I.[/english]
