Plato
Plato was born 427B.C. and died 348 B.C., he was a great philosopher and critic. He came from a well known family. He got a number of interests in philosophy, logic, literary criticism and literature. He called for constructing Or building places for teaching the principles of morality to people. He was exited because of his strong believes, he made a travel abroad to Rome and Egypt then he returned back to build his big academic institution known as the academy.

His points of view collected from The Republic and the Low. The Republic is a book about an ideal city. Poets were excluded from this Republic for some reasons. The main aim of his work is to educate and supply people of that Republic. Plato, in his work, followed the theory of forms and ideas. Plato in order to express his views he imagined that there is an interrupter some body being addressed or being up answering the questions of Plato and this person in Plato’s mind is Socrates. Socrates is made to answer the question of Plato. The main reasons that motive Plato to exclude poets from his Republic are.

In his main theory, Plato believes that all objects around in the world in fact are not original. The point of originality has established by God and people got an image of this original copy through imitation. The originality has no place in Plato’s Republic. In Plato’s point of view, poets try to imitate or to produce a second copy not the original one. They are not following the original and there are three steps far from reality or originality. The point that is the Greek word refers to “mimesis” means representation later on it means imitation. Plato believes that the poet is original by the view of imitation. In other words they looked at poetry as a matter of imitation and the poet is not a true genius. Those poets, who try to imitate, are still unable to produce the original image and they are not true. In the process of reflecting what come in mind, they cannot

Express unless they are inspired by some supernatural powers. Example, Aristotle and Stella by Sir Philip Sidney. So, poets in view of Plato are just speakers of Muses. They only express what Muses inspired them to say. Plato did not include those people who have no control on themselves. Poets are unhappy because of the interference of God in the destiny of people. They try either to undermine the position of God or saying something shameful about despoiling the image of God. On the other hand, they are uplifting some main learned characters to the status of God. God should not be depicted by poets according to their own views.

The nature of poetry

Plato believes that poetry has three forms.

1- Narrative and simple: The poet himself becomes the speaker.

2-Imitative: The character says what the poet wants to say.

3-Narrative and Imitative: It is a mixture of the narrative and imitative. Poets are considered deceivers. They cheat people when they want to write. They are imitating and not producing the original copy because they do not have this copy. There are some poets allowed in his Republic those who describe God very well. They know how to describe God and they put God in an acceptable position. Those who are not inspired by Muses or other powers. Their main concern is to educate people. The Republic should be protected by the Guardians. The state of poets in Plato’s view is that they should serve the Guardians of the city. He believes that his city should be protected by male and female. According morality, every thing should be given to people through the Guardians
