Dealing With New Words
When youl find new words while reading in English, it is important not to use a dictionary for every new word .
Instead , follow these steps :
1- Try to guess the meaning of a new word from the context . The context is the sentence or paragraph that the word is in.
2- If you can guess the meaning , do not use a dictionary ( even if you do not undertand the exact meaning).
3- Sometimes the context is too limited ( short , not helpful ) , or there are too many new words, so you cannot guess the meaning.
What should you do ? First , decide how important the word is .
4- If the word is not essential , do not worry about it . Just keep reading.
5-If the word is essential and you cannot understand the sentence or paragraph without it , you will need to use a monolingual ( E-E ) dictionary.
