Pre-writing is a way of organizing your thoughts and beginning to put the information you have on paper. It is best to do a pre-writing activity before you actually begin writing your paper or essay.

You should use prewriting to . . .
think more clearly
see a start of your paper
keep track of your ideas
practice expressing yourself in writing

BASIC PREWRITING STRATEGIES
Develop Questions

[englishtext]Mapping is a process of reorganizing and rearranging (moving) the most important ideas and information from your reading or textbook and converting it into a diagram with your own words to help you understand and remember what you read.

Because mapping makes it easier to organize and remember what you have read, mapping is a useful studying technique. Moreover, mapping can help you organize your own writing when used as a pre-writing technique.

How do you select the type of map to be used

Use Charts or Matrixes to compare and contrast qualities, examples, descriptions, and facts.
صورة
Use Stars or Spiders to show themes, examples, descriptions, and definitions
صورة
Use Trees or Hierarchies to show categories, classifications, analysis, structures, descriptions, and examples.
صورة
Use Chains to show processes, sequences, causes and effects, chronological order, and steps.
صورة
Use Flowcharts/Venn Diagrams to show relationships between diagrams, points of overlap, and points of distinction.
صورة
Use Sketches to show physical structures, visual images, concrete objects, spatial relationships, and descriptions of places.

Formal Three-Part Outline
Introduction, Body & Conclusion

NOTE: Formal outlines require a special numbering system. If you have a I, you must have a II. If you have an A, you must have a B. If you have a 1, you must have a 2, and so on

The traditional outline has three sections: introduction, body, and conclusion
The basic model looks like this
Title
I. Introduction

A. The background .B The thesis statement

II. Body

A. First major category of support

1. Supporting detail
2. Supporting detail
3. Supporting detail

B. Second major category of support

2. Supporting detail

C. Third major category of support

2. Supporting detail

[englishtext]Clustering
CLUSTERING IS SIMILAR to another process called Brainstorming. Clustering is something that you can do on your own or with friends or classmates to try to find inspiration in the connection between ideas. The process is similar to freewriting in that as you jot down ideas on a piece of paper or on the blackboard, you mustn't allow that ugly self-censor to intrude and say that your idea (or anyone else's) is dumb or useless. Write it down anyway. In Clustering, you jot down only words or very short phrases. Use different colored pens as ideas seem to suggest themselves in groups. Use printing or longhand script to suggest that ideas are main thoughts or supportive ideas. Don't bother to organize too neatly, though, because that can impede the flow of ideas. Don't cross anything out because you can't tell where an idea will lead you. When you get a few ideas written down, you can start to group them, using colored circles or whatever. Draw linking lines as connections suggest themselves.
Below is a finished example of Clustering. It is printed here with permission of the aforementioned Thruston Parry. The assignment was to write a Cause and Effect Paper on the weather phenomenon known as El Niño. If you have a very fast modem connection or you're working in a computer lab, you can click HERE or on the image below for an animated sequence showing how the clustering might have happened. (A large image file --532 kb -- is involved, and we don't encourage you to download it without a fast connection; if the download stalls, you can return to this page by clicking on the RETURN link below the image, or you can click on STOP and then BACK.)[/englishtext]
