The Romantic Spirit Jean Jacques Rousseau Jean Jacques Rousseau The philosopher and writer Jean Jacques Rousseau believed that individuals in a state of nature were morally superior to those living in modern, civilized society. His belief in natural innocence pervaded his ideas about education and society as well as his fiction. In his yearning for what he saw as an uncorrupted past, his concern with the exploration of conflicts between moral and sensual values, and his belief in the natural goodness of man, Rousseau was a major influence on 19th-century romanticism, both literary and political. |
