Read each of the following statements carefully and then indicate whether is it true (T) or false (F).(20) points 1- a- Anxiety is associated with the feelings of uneasiness ,frustration fear , or worry a learner experiences in the classroom (T) b- The difference between audio and visual styles varies from one culture to another (T ) c- Inter-language refers to the language of the learner of a foreign language who has not mastered the target language ( T ) d- Code-switching is using on L1 world with l1 pronunciation while speaking in12 ( T) e- According to Carl Rogers ,teachers can be real facilitators of learning by establishing an inter-personal relationship with the learners ( T ) f- Inhibitions are looked at as defense systems that learners place between themselves and others to facilitate L2 learning (F ) g- People derive their self-esteem from the accumulation of knowledge and experiences with themselves and others ( T ) h- A learning style is a specific method of approaching a problem or a task possible way to solving a particular problem ( f ) i- Contrastive analysis is an improvement to error analysis ( F ) j- Circumlocution is creating nonexisting L2 word based on a supposed rule of L1 ( F ) 2- In no more than four sentences define ( explain and give an adequate example on ) only Two if the following linguistic terms? Error : a noticeable deviation from adult grammar of a native speaker , reflecting an inter-language competence of the learner. e.g does Jhon can sing. There is an error here which shows that the competence of this learner treat s auxiliaries as main verbs and uses another auxiliary in case of questions Approximation : this is the compensatory strategy used in communication .it involves using an alternative term which expresses the meaning of the target lexical item as closely as possible .e.g using ( ship ) for sailboat Underdifferentiation : An item is the native language is absent in the target language , example English auxiliary do is absent in Spanish as L2 feminine inflection Arabic L1 adjectives are absent in English L2 .the pronouns he and she are absent in English 3- Study the utterances below focusing on elements or transfer , or overgeneralization ( 42 points , 8 points each) I gave him the book I borrowed it from him last week . This sentence shows negative transfer or interference of L1 or Arabic in English through the use of the pronoun ( it ) . It is sort of literal translation, it should be , I gave him the book i borrowed from him last week She is working in London since2000 This is also a case of negative transfer or interference , this sentence was probably produced by a French or an Arab learner of English , this sentence should be : She has been working in London since 2000 4- ‘Using what you have learned from this course , comment on the following dialogues ,the first one is between a mother and her child while the second one is between a native speaker of English and an English language learner ( 10 points, 5 each ) Child : Nobody do not like me Mother : No , say nobody likes me Child : nobody do not like me Mother : no , now listen carefully : say nobody likes me Child : oh . nobody do not likes me This dialogue shows that children use imitation in L1 acquisition and that and that imitation is of two types: meaning or deep level of imitation as used by the child, and surface level of imitation which the mother is keen on to the child , what he produces has the same meaning as what the mother wants him to say although the two constructions are different in grammar. Learner : I lost my road Native speaker : you lost your road ? Learner: uh , i lost . I lost .I got lost The example illustrates lexical avoidance as a communicative strategy the learner fails to correctly use the phrase ( i lost my way ) and instead uses ( i lost my road ) but he realises that he is wrong so he avoids the whole thing and says got lost 5- there are different criteria for identifying various kinds of motivation in the context of L2 learning .Discuss the various ways of classifying motivations and provide adeguate examples where possible ( 26 poits ) Definition of motivations : ( technically ) refers to the choices people make as to what experiences or goals they will approach or avoid , and the degree of effort they will exert in that respect . Motivations can classified in terms of source and in terms of the learner'ssocial and psychology attitudes And then write about theme from your lectures The end |
