[english]A Category of the Poems Classified by their Poets and Schools I - Neo-Classical poetry " The Fire of London " by John Dryden. Absalom and Achtitophel "The Earl of Shaftesbury " by John Dryden. " The Rape of the lock " by Alexander Pope. " An Essay on Criticism " by Alexander Pope. ****************************************** II - Pre-Romantic Poetry " An Elegy in a country churchyard " by Thomas Gray. " Ode to Evening " by William Collins. **************************************** III - Romantic poetry " Frost at Midnight " by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. " The Prelude Childhood and School-time " by William Wordsworth. " An Ode to The West Wind " by Percy Bysshe Shelley. ***********************************************************************************The Main Points in Every School 1 ) NEO-CLASSICAL POETRY: A stair on the activity of the life of the upper class – the Aristocratic one - (no change in the theme). We have a kind of change in language: "the heroic couplet". In both Dryden and pope, each couplet has a complete idea , the following of Nature.{Logic, order, moderation ,following of reason.} (Nature) is the general human nature, classical in the sense. The imagination is limited and they cannot express freely as in Romantic poetry. They depend on mind more than emotion. Dryden talks in favor of English _ Elizabethan poetry taking Shakespeare as an example The use of Satire in the poems of Dryden and pope. {The rape of the lock} by Pope criticized the triviality of the Aristocratic class. He criticized the Baron in his way to get the girl, Belinda, by praying and asking the help of God. 2 ) PRE-ROMANTIC POETRY: The poets are still classical in a certain way but express in some personal tone. They also get free from the term of Nature 3 ) ROMANTIC POETRY: William Wordsworth had said once: “ a man is speaking with men”. Nature is changed for them to be the ocean, trees, and mountains , the birds ….etc. They express their personal life. The freedom given to the imagination is unlimited. They depend on emotion and feelings .[/english] |
