Themes of The Merchant of Venice

Greed-revenge-mercy and forgiveness-friendship-philanthropy versus misanthropy-justice-filial obligation and filial disobedience.

1-Greed: Greed in a theme that is mostly portrayed by Shylock. He is obsessed with money. He cares only about money. When he hears the news of his daughter's marriage to a Christian, he cries, "My daughter, O my ducats , O my gaughter,my ducats and my daughter!".He mentions his money before he mentions his daughter because he doesn't care about his daughter as much as he cares about his money. When Tubal tells him that Jessica traded her mother's ring for a monkey,he gets very angry .Besides,he always lends money with charging interest,so this is another proof for his greed.

2-Revenge:Shylock hates Antonio for two reasons: one is money, the other is religion.Shylock is a Jew , and Antonio is a Christian. Shylock accused Antonio of spitting on him and cursing him because of his religion. Shylock, also, hates Antonio for being a Christian. Shylock referred to Antonio's friends as,"Christian fools". The other reason for hating Antonio is that Antonio lends the needy money without charging interest, which had a bad effect on Shylock's business. For these two reasons,Shylock wants to take revenge . In order to get revenge,he insists to take a pound of flesh if the loan is not paid back within three months. Shylock's determination to take the pound of flesh proves that he really hates Antonio and that he is serious in taking revenge.

3-Love and Marriage:Bassanio loves Portia and wants to marry her ,but he must go to Belmont first and choose one of the three caskets. If he chooses the right one,he will be able to marry her.Portia can not choose her husband because this will be against her father's wishes. At last,Bassanio chooses the leaden casket which is the right one. She gets very happy ,which proves that she really loved him. There are also Jessica and Lorenzo, who are also in love with each other. However, they cannot get Shylock's agreement for their marriage because she's a Jew and Lorenzo is a Christian. As a result, Jessica elopes with Lorenzo.

4-Friendship: The Merchant of Venice is a play about friendship. In the first scene , Antonio displays the nature of friendship that he feels for Bassanio. He signs the bond for the sake of friendship. Bassanio also loves Antonio, but not as much as Antonio loves him. There seem to be several levels of friendship represented throughout the play,The friendship of Antonio and Bassanio is contrasted with the friendship of Shylock and Tubal. A good example of the friendship of Antonio and Bassanio is when Antonio signs the bond and agrees to Shylock's conditions.

5-Filial Obligation and Filial disobedience: Although Portia admits that the "will of a living daughter" is against (or contrasted to) the "will of a living father", she still loves and respects him. On the other hand, Jessica is ashamed of her father. She is a daughter only by blood, but not by manners. Jessica breaks all the customs and elopes with Lorenzo. She hurts her father by marrying a Christian. However, one may justify her actions because of her father's bad treatment.

6-Mercy and Forgiveness: The bond which Antonio signs is taken very seriously by Shylock. He insists to have his pound of flesh. Throughout the story, Shylock is given many chances to forgive Antonio and have some mercy, but he insists on having the pound of flesh. As a result, he loses his money and his religion. Even when Bassanio offered Shylock three times the original amount of money,Shylock didn't show any mercy. In the court, when the lawyer (Portia in disguise) asks him to show some mercy, Shylock says that he will not show any. When Shylock discovers his mistake and realizes that his life is in the duke's hands,he is the first to beg for mercy.

رشوووش,

I read them and actually they are written in very good and simple grammar .

They are a treasure for the first year student who studies this play

Here is a translation of some words to enrich your themes :
1- philanthropy ( حب الخير تجاه البشر )
2-misanthropy(بغض الجنس البشري)
3- money with charging interest = usury = (الربا)

رشوووش,

Thanks again .........may God bless your efforts
