Verbs

Auxiliary verbs

Auxiliary verbs, sometimes called helping verbs, help complete the form and meaning of main verbs.
The auxiliary verbs include the modal verbs, the primary verbs, and a few special verbs like dare and need. The modal verbs are can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would.
They are called modal because they express the mood of verbs (for more on this, see verbs, mood of and subjunctive)
The primary verbs are be, do, and have.
The primary verbs have the distinction of being able to function either as main verbs or as auxiliaries.
The auxiliary verbs differ from main verbs in the following ways:

They do not take word endings to form participles or agree with their subject. Thus, we say She may go to the store, but never She mays go to the store.
They come before not in negative clauses, and they do not use do to form the negative: You might not like that. A main verb uses do to form the negative and follows not: You do not like that.
They come before the subject in a question: Can I have another apple? Would you like to go to the movies? Main verbs must use do and follow the subject to form questions: Do you want to go to the movies?
They take the infinitive without to: I will call you tomorrow. A main verb that takes an infinitive always uses to: I promise to call you tomorrow

"The need for auxiliary verbs

In English sentences, a lot of important meanings are expressed by the form of the verb phrase - for example questioning, negation, time, completion, continuation, repetition, willingness, possibility, obligation.

But English verbs do not have many different forms: the maximum (except for "be") is five (e.g. see, sees, seeing, saw, seen). So to express all these meanings, a number of 'auxiliary' (or 'helping') verbs are added to other verbs. There are two groups:

1) be, do and have

Be is added to other verbs to make progressive or passive forms.

Is it raining?

She was imprisoned for three years.

Do is used to make questions, negatives and emphatic forms of non-auxiliary verbs.

Do you smoke?

It didn't matter.

Do come in.

Have is used to make perfect forms.

What have you done?

I realised that I hadn't turned the lights off.

2) modal auxiliary verbs

The verbs will, shall, would, should, can, could, may, might, must and ought are usually called 'modal auxiliary verbs'. They are used with other verbs to add various meanings, mostly to do with degrees of certainty or obligation."/]

Verbs

Future continuous

The future continuous is formed with shall/will + be + - ing:

I/we shall be doing
You/he/she/it/they will be doing

We can use the future continuous to talk about events that will be happening at a particular time in the future:

This time next month we'll be sailing through the Caribbean.
I hope the race goes well. We 'll be watching it on TV.

We can also use the future continuous to talk about things that we expect to happen in the usual course of events. In this case it does not suggest "continuousness":

You 'll be seeing her soon, won't you?
Management will be meeting the union representative again presently.

We can also use the future continuous to make polite enquiries, when we wish to know what somebody's plan are:

Will you be coming along with us this evening?

We can also use the future continuous to talk about what we believe or guess is happening at the moment of speaking:

They' ll be arriving in New York just about now.
I wouldn't phone just yet - she 'll be having her weekly massage.

Verbs

Future in the past صورة

We use the future in the past when we want to speak about something which had still not happened at the moment of time in the past that we are referring to.

There are various different forms of future in the past, all of which correspond to forms that we usually use to refer to the future. In fact, the process is the same as that used for converting direct speech to indirect (reported) speech - the verb tenses "move back in time":

Am/Is going to = was going to
Are going to = were going to
Present continuous (am/is meeting) = past continuous (was meeting)
Present continuous (are meeting) = past continuous (were meeting)
Future simple (will) = would
When I saw John last time, he was going to travel around the world.
John said "I'm going to travel around the world".
I saw Sue this morning, but she couldn't speak to me because she was catching a train shortly afterwards.
Sue said "I can't speak to you because I am catching a train shortly".
The judge put him into prison, from where he would never leave before he died.
The judge said "I am putting you in prison, from where you will never leave before you die".

Hiba.Sh,
Thanx really for this important topic .... all of us, students and graduated members, should read it to remember these pieces of information all the time because ''verbs'' is a basic lesson for all courses we may teach in the future

Hiba.Sh,
As for the tense ''future progressive'' I know that we use it
اقتباس:
We can use the future continuous to talk about events that will be happening at a particular time in the future
اقتباس:
We can also use the future continuous to talk about things that we expect to happen in the usual course of events

But as for the following uses this is the first time I know we use them for this purpose ! Can you tell me about the evidence of this topic ?
