Knock three times on my front door.
اقرع الباب ثلاث مرات على بابي الأمامي
Three hops in the hall. Drop my bag at the foot of the stairs.
ثلاث قفزات في الصالة.أنزلُ حقيبتي إلى قدم السلّم
I count three steps at a time up the stairs to my room.
أعد ثلاث خطواتٍ في وقت ما فوق عند السلم باتجاه غرفتي
Three is my perfect number, safe, a ward against evil.
الرقم ثلاثة هو رقمي الممتاز و الآمن و هو حماية من الشر.
'Hello up there,' calls Mum. 'Come down to the kitchen. How was school?'
" مرحباً" نادت الأم " إنزل إلى غرفة الطعام ." كيف كانت المدرسة؟"
The kitchen is warm and I can smell newly baked bread just out of the oven. There is a plate in front of my chair with a thick slice of bread, dripping honey, and a glass of milk.
المطبخ دافئ و استطيع أن أشم رائحة خبز طازج مخبوز حديثاً تماما خارج الفرن .هنالك صحن معدني أمام كرسي فيه كسرة خبز سميكة و عسلٌ مقطّر و كاس كم الحليب.
'Yum, thanks Mum. School was good fun today. Tom put a frog in Mandy's desk. Jenny fell off the swings and broke her arm; Mrs. Bunson fell over in the playground and ripped a big hole in her dress. We could see her knickers. She wondered why all the kids were laughing and when she found out she went home.
" ما أشهاه " شكراً أمي . كانت المدرسة جيدة و ممتعة .وضع توم ضفدعاً في مقعد ماندي .سقطت جيني من على الأراجيح و كسرت ذراعها .المدرسة بنسون سقطت في الباحة و تمزقت بقعة كبيرة من ثوبها . استطعنا رؤية ملابسها الداخلية . و قد تساءلت عن سبب ضحك الأولاد و عندما اكتشفت ذلك الأمر عادت على منزلها.
'Tomorrow, Simon and I are going to take our snails and put them on Ms Turley's desk. School is cool.'
" سنقوم أنا و توم غداً بأخذ حلزوناتنا لنضعهم في درج الآنسة تورلي . المدرسة جميلة ."
Mum looks at me, shakes her head, and we both laugh.
نظرت لي أمي و هزّت برأسها ثم ضحكنا سوياً
The afternoon sun catches my mother's cheek and I see a dark mark. She sees me looking and puts her hand to her cheek, covering it up.
غطت شمس بعد الظهيرة وجنة أمي، أستطيع أن أرى إشارة مظلمة.رأتني أمي ناظراً لها و قد وضعت يدها على خدّها لتغطيه.
'Go and play, Edward, and I'll call you for tea.'
اذهب و العب يا ادوارد و سأناديك لتناول الشاي .
'Okay, Mum.'
حسنا أمي
I have a secret outside that no one knows but me. There's a thrush nesting in the ti-tree near the vegie garden. I have watched her since she started building her nest, and then she laid her eggs. Now I wait for them to hatch. Mother thrush no longer takes any notice of me peering into her nest. I stand on tiptoe so I can see properly but, before I can see into the nest, she zooms past me with a huge grasshopper in her beak. I can see the three featherless bodies and she stuffs the grasshopper into one of the gaping mouths. I punch the air with joy. Tomorrow I will dig up some worms for her to feed her babies and I will save my secret until tomorrow to tell Mum.
لدي مكان سرّي في الخارج لا يعرفه أحد سواي.توجد هناك حمامة السمّن حيث تعشش في شجرة التاتنيوم قرب الحديقة النباتية . لقد شاهدتها منذ أن بدأت ببناء عشّها و من ثم وضعت بيضها. أنا انتظرها الآن لتفقص . لم تعد حمامة السمّن الأم تأخذ أية ملاحظة عني عندما أرنو إلى عشّها .وقفت على رؤوس أصابعي لأتمكن من النظر بشكل صحيح .لكنه قبل أن أنظر إلى العش ، كانت تئز مجتازتني واضعة جندباً كبيراً في منقارها . أستطيع أن أرى ثلاثة أجسام غير مكسوة بالريش و كيف وضعت الجندب في إحدى الأفواه الفارغة. لوحت في الهواء بمرح . سوف احفر غداً و أبحث عن بعض الديدان لها لكي تطعم صغارها و سأحفظ سري حتى الغد لأخبر أمي به.
I pick some lettuce leaves to feed my snails. Find three slugs. Look for three caterpillars.
جمعت بعض أوراق الخس ، سأجد ثلاث بزاقات و سأبحث عن ثلاثة صراصير .
'Edward, tea's ready.'
" ادوارد" الشاي جاهز.
Mum's waiting for me as I come through the door. She takes one look at my hands and pretends she's going to be sick.
كانت أمي تنتظرني عندما وصلت عائداً عند الباب .ألقت نظرةً على يدي و تظاهرت أنها ستصاب بالمرض.
'Your hands need a soaking in disinfectant and bleach for six months but, for now, just give them a good wash, and try using soap for a change.
" تحتاج يداك إلى نقعٍ في مادة مطهرة و مبيدةٍ للجراثيم لستة اشهر .أما الآن، اذهب و اغسلهما جيدا، و استخدم الصابون لتغير حالتها.
'Nat’l be late tonight so, after tea, you can do your homework in the kitchen,' Mum says, folding her arms around her body as though hugging herself. I see a dark, ugly mark on her arm and quickly look down at my plate.
" سيتأخر والدك الليلة ، لذلك ، و بعد تناول الشاي ، تستطيع أداء وظيفتك في المطبخ" قالت الأم طاويةً ذراعيها حول جسدها كما لو أنها تعانق نفسها. أستطيع رؤية علامة سوداء و بشعة على ذراعها ، لكنني انظر بسرعةٍ صحني .
I eat my tea. I eat my potato first, carrots next and last of all my sausage. I slip the slimy green spinach into my hand under the table. The snails will love it; I'll give it to them tomorrow.
تناولت الشاي . و تناولت البطاطا المخصصة لي أولا ، ثم الجر , و أخيرا تناولت السجق المخصص لي . قمتُ بإنزال أوراق السبانخ اللزجة بيدي إلى تحت الطاولة .ستحبها الحلزونات سأعطيها لهم غداً .
'Eat your spinach, Edward,' Mum calls from the hall.
" تناول السبانخ يا ادوارد" نادت الأم من الصالة.
How does she know? I shove the spinach into my mouth and swallow without chewing. Lick my fingers; wipe my hand on my shirt. Yuck - spinach.
كيف عرفت ؟ لقد دفعت السبانخ لفمي و ابتلعتها دون مضغٍ . لعقت أصابعي و مسحت يدي بثوبي . يا للقرف ...سبانخ .
I climb slowly up the stairs: one, two, three... back up to my bedroom.
صعدت السلالم ببطء: واحد، اثنان، ثلاثة.. و عدت إلى غرفة نومي .
Look in on my snails. I've been training them every day after tea to race. Simon and I are going to race our snails at school tomorrow. If mine win, Simon will have to let me ride his bike to school for a week. I go to Mum's wardrobe and take out a turquoise shirt. If I cut a bit out of the lining she'll never notice. This'll make fantastic racing silks and this is my favourite colour.
ألقيت نظرةً على حلزوناتي .لقد قمت بتدريبها كل يوم بعد تناول الشاي على السباق. سنقوم انأ و سيمون بإجراء سباق للحلزونات غداً. إذا ربحت حلزوناتي ، سيكون على سيمون إعطائي درّاجته لمدّة أسبوع . ذهبت لحجرة ملابس أمي و أخرجت قميصا فيروزياً.إذا قطعت قطعة صغيرةً من البطانة ، لن تلاحظ أبدا . سيجعل هذا الشيء مهارات سباقية رائعة و هذا هو لوني المفضل .
'Here are your big, juicy lettuce leaves,' I tell them, 'eat them up and tomorrow you will be ready to race against the world. If one of you wins, I'll give you all strawberries for tea.'
" ها هي أوراق الخس الرطبة لكم" ." سوف اخبرها بذلك" " كليها و غداً ستكونون جاهزين لتسابقوا متدين العالم بأسره .إذا فاز أحدكما ، سأعطيه كل الفراولة التي مع الشاي.
I jump onto my bed and bounce three times, then three times more.
قفزت على سريري و ووثبت ثلاث مرات و ثلاث مرّات أخرى .
Sleep catches me on the last bounce.
هزمني النوم عند القفزة الأخيرة .
I'm falling, drifting softly on a feather.
أنا اخلد للنوم و أتمدد برفق فوق فرشة مكسوة بالريش
The front door bangs. I wake from my dream.
انصعق الباب بسرعة ، و استيقظت من حلمي .
The Minotaur is here. I slide from my bed and creep on stumbling feet to the cupboard. I open the door and crawl into the corner, leaving the door open a crack. I rest my head on my knees and put my arms over my head.
الميناتور هنا ، تسللت من سريري و حبوت على أقدامٍ متعثرة باتجاه خزانة الملابس . فتحتُ الباب و زحفت إلى الزاوية تاركاً مفتوحاً بمسافة شق . لقد أرحت راسي على ركبتي ووضعت يدي فوق رأسي.
I hear the Minotaur roaring and bellowing. The walls and floor shake as he tosses his head and stamps his hooves, and I can feel the heat and steam of his nearness.
أستطيع سماع الميناتور يزأر و يصيح .. إن الجدران و الأرض تهتز عندما يرفع رأسه و يضغط بحوافره ، و استطيع حرارة و بخار اقترابه .
FOOTSTEPS
خطوات
Hold my breath for as long as I can.
أقوم بحبس أنفاسي بقدر ما استطيع
If I breathe he will hear me, and find me hiding in the cupboard. He will shake me and call me a coward...
سيسمعني إذا تنفست ، و سيجدني مختبئاً في الخزانة. سوف يهزني و يقول أنني جبان.
Did I step on a crack today?
هل دست على شقٍ اليوم ؟
'Edward! Edward!'
" ادوارد ، يا ادوارد "
I hear the whisper through the opening door.
سمعت الهمسة عبر الباب المفتوح .
'Oh, Mum! I thought...'
" آه ، أمي ! لقد ظننت "
'Shhh! It's okay. It's all right... get dressed quickly and carry your shoes.'
“شه! حسناً . كل شيء على ما يرام البس بسرعة و ارتدي حذائك.
'Why? What's happening?'
"لماذا ؟ ماذا يحصل ؟"
'We are going away for a while. Hurry, before he wakes.'
" سنذهب بعيداً لفتة. عجّل، قبل أن يستيقظ."
My mum takes my hand and together we creep down the stairs in the dark.
أخذتني أمي من يدي و نزلنا السلالم في الظلام .
I can hear the Minotaur mumbling, snoring and snuffling.
اسمع الميناتور مهمهماً و شاخراً و متنفساً .
I have forgotten my snails.
لقد نسيت حلزوناتي .
