Hello everybody, I liked to participate in this section through this topic.

We use except or except for to introduce the only thing (or things) or person (or people) that the main part of the sentence does NOT include:

1- I had no money to give him except (for) the few coins in my pocket.
2- The price of the holiday includes all meals except (for) lunch.
3- Everyone seemed to have been invited except (for) Mr Fares and me.

However, we use except for rather than except to show that a general statement made in the main part of the sentence is NOT completely true:

4- The car was undamaged in the accident, except for a broken headlight.
5- The room was completely dark except for light coming under the door.
6- Except for the weather, the holiday couldn't have been better.

We use except, NOT except for, before prepositions, to-infinitives, bare infinitives, and that-clauses (although that may be left out) :

7- There is likely to be rain everywhere today except in Homs.
8- I rarely need to go into the city centre except to do some shopping.
9- There is nothing more the doctor can do except keep an eye on him.
10- They look just like the real thing, except (that) they are made of plastic.

It is I, Odysseus

What is the difference between cheaply and on the cheap?

He bought it cheaply.

He bought it on the cheap.

In the first sentence, he bought it at low price;whereas in the second sentence he bought it at low price because he is stingy i.e he doesn't like to spend his money on buying things. This implication is not included in the first senetence
[/english]
Stingy : بخيل
الجملة الأولى :اشتراها بثمن بخس.

الجملة الثانية: اشتراها لرخص ثمنها.
