Peace be upon you all ![]() A few days ago, I was thinking about a useful topic which can help us to concentrate on a very important section in the English grammar ![]() Then I found that some main verbs have some special rules, so I will put them here with their rules verb by verb to be as a reference for us. ![]() Have/had/had 1- What can we have? We can… have a lesson. have a party. have an exam. have a cup of coffee. have an ice-cream. 2- Expressions with have: 1) Is that your camera? Can I have a look? = Can I look at it. 2) Is that your bicycle? Can I have a go? = Can I ride it. 3) Goodbye! Have a good journey! = Somebody is going away. 4) Do you have a moment? = Do you have some time. Can I have a word with you? = Can I speak to you. 5) We always have a good time in our English lessons = We always have fun; we enjoy them. 6) I'm going to have my hair cut. See you later. Can you meet me at the hairdresser's? 7) I want to learn to ski but I don't have the time. 3- Have + got >>> informal (speaking): Examples: I've got three sisters. Have you got a pen? I've got a problem. Can I have a word with you? I've got a cold. Have >>> formal (writing): Examples: I have homework. I want to have my breakfast. 4- Have to : *We use it when the situation means you must do something. Examples: All students have to do the exam. I haven't got a car, so I have to walk to school every day. See you with a new verb… ![]() ![]() Tami |

Go/went/gone 1- Go: Go means to move from one place to another. Eg: I go to work by bike. *We can go to a place on foot or in some kind of transport. To make it clear that we are going on foot we can say: Eg: We're walking to work this morning. 2- Go + prepositions: Examples: -Kim went in (to) his room and shut the door. -Yuko went out of the house and into the garden. -Rani was tired. He went up the stairs slowly. -The phone was ringing. She went down the stairs quickly. -I'm going back home this evening. 3- Go + ing for activities: *Go is often used with –ing for different activities. Examples: -I hate going shopping. -I usually go swimming in the morning. -Let's go dancing. -Do you like going sightseeing when you are on holiday? -Hans goes skiing every winter. -Bob is going fishing today. 4- Future plans: *"Be going to" is often used for plans for the future: Example: -On Saturday Jan is going to visit his aunt. On Sunday we're going to stay at home. On Monday I'm going to meet Sam at the restaurant. See you with a new verb… Tami |
