An Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard

- 33+34+35: Here the poet moves to talk about the rich. He says that with all properties and pride which the rich have, they still wait the hour of death as the poor do.
- 36+37: The end of the greatness of the rich is in the grave.
- 38: Those poor people are neglected and forgotten. Nothing is done to praise them, and this is all because they are poor.
- 39+40 : Those poor people are forgotten because they are poor, but if they were rich you will find many people in their funerals to praise them.
- 41+42: Can all the artificial things that are done for the dead make their soul come back  to the body again?
- 43: Can this kind of praise move or affect the dust on the grave?
- 44: Can flattery affect the dead person in the grave?
- 45+46: In this place where people lay, we may find a person who was very active in his\her lifetime.
- 47: Strong fighters who were very much helpful to their country may be laying in this grave.
- 48: Some of the people laying there may have been great literary figures.
- 49+50: For those people, books of history never opened their pages, but they are open for thieves, criminals and people who did bad things.
- 51+52: Nothing is being said about their nobility and their good deeds are being frozen.
- 53: It is possible to find  valuable stones which are very much bright hidden there.
- 54: These stones are like the stones hidden in the depth of the ocean.
- 55: There might be many beautiful unseen flowers of many colors which give a nice smell.
- 56: This smell is being wasted in the air, not enjoyed by people.
- 57+58: It is possible to find a strong fighter as brave as Hampden who stood and fought for his country.
- 59: We may find among those people many poets as great as Milton, but no one knows about them.
- 60: We may also find many leaders as great as Cromwell but without committing ant sins.
- 61: We can also find great speakers who attract the attention of the listeners.
- 62: Those people hate destructive and harmful things.
- 63: They are able to defend their nation and keep it safe.
- 64: If you want to know about a nation you should know about those people.
- 65+66: Those people are lucky for being poor because being poor kept them virtuous and away from crimes.
- 67: Because they are poor, they do not need to kill to become kings.
- 68: They are not obliged to become heartless and out of mercy.
- 69: They are not obliged to hide the truth about anything evil or wrong.
- 70: They do not feel shy or ashamed of themselves because of what they do.
- 71: They are not in need to make a worshipping place to pray for useless things.
- 72: Those people are not in need to behave the way sinful people behave.
- 73+74: Because those people are far from the crowded and complicated life of the city, their wishes remained virtuous and clean.
- 75+76: Because those people are living near nature in the village, they have a peaceful life away from any vile and sins.

An Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard The Epitaph

* Paraphrasing:
- 1: The poet here is talking about the way a man is buried.
- 2: This man is poor and ignored.
- 3: He knew very much about science and was familiar with it.
- 4: The poet says that melancholy is the mother of this man, so we can expect how sad this man is.
- 5: He has done many good works and was sincere with others.
- 6: It is known from religion: One who did good will be rewarded by God.
- 7: This man was very poor that  he only had one tear.
- 8: This kind of men find that making friends is much better than having money.
- 9: This man is ignored and forgotten because his family is poor.
- 10: This man has done nothing wrong to speak about.
- 11+12: The poet here is telling us about the equality in front of death.

Ode to Evening by Collins
* Paraphrasing:
- 1: When the simple song of nature stops, we know that the day is over and the evening starts.
- 2: The poet says: I hope I can write something musical to please your humble ears.
- 3+4: The poet wants to write something as musical as the sound of the water when it runs in its spring or as the sound of waves in the ocean.
- 5+6: The poet is speaking about the evening as a beautiful woman. Sun is being personified as beautiful woman with bright hair who hides in the tent during the night and the clouds are the skirt of the sun.
- 7: This entry of the sun is a very beautiful scene.
- 8: The ocean is its bed.
- 9+10: Now it is silence. Only the sound of the bat which is shrieking can be heard at this time.
- 11+12: Another sound is the sound of the beetle which is like a horn.
- 13: When this beetle moves in its dark way in the night, it gives that sound.
-14+15: The poet here says something without a meaning to complete the line. All he means that the sound of this beetle is like the humming sound.
- 16+17: The poet wants the evening to teach him how to write a musical piece.
- 18: Here is an indication that when he speaks about the evening, he speaks about nature. He wants the sounds of his poems to fill the silence of the evening.
- 19: He finds this silence to be unsuitable.
- 20+21: The poet is praying for the return of the evening all the time which enables him to write his musical poems.

Childhood and school time

* Paraphrasing:
- The poet begins with remembering the past time when he was growing up both mentally and physically.
- There were two things affecting him: The beauty of nature, and fear.
- He was very much pleased with the place where he was born, and he had the same feeling when he was in the valley that he loves. This was a long time ago when his family moved from the village to the city.
- All of those incidents and feeling occurred when he was less than nine years old.
- The poet is trying to tell us a kind of a story, that is, the poem is almost narration. When he was on the slop of the mountains in winter when it was too cold, near the end of autumn, he found his pleasure to wander at midnight at such weather among hills and soft holes where birds hide.
- He was thinking and having a strong desire, he was at night carrying on his shoulders a number of traps. He comments; I was disturbing the peace of nature at that time.
- The poet describes how he moves from one trap to another. He is alone in such a cold weather so he has a kind of fear, hurrying on a clear night, again a reference to the disturbing towards the elements of nature which were at peace.
- He starts thinking of doing something wrong which is against reason.
- The poet says that because his traps weren't catching any birds, he started thinking of stealing birds from the traps of other boys.
- After stealing the birds, he starts hearing some sounds coming after him. These sounds are not known to him, as if they are the sounds of someone stepping on the grass.
- Now, the poet stars telling us about a new incident that happened in spring in which the effect he felt was not different.
- He was in a hilly place and the time was in the early morning.
- The weather at that time was warm. He is asking himself again: What was I doing there at that time?
- He was in a place where the other bird built her nest. He was trying to reach the nest and destroy it.
- His aim was an evil, mien and not a great one. But at that time he failed to achieve his aim.
- When he was trying to reach the top of the nest, climbing by holding the bunches of grass an the walls and putting his fingers in the small holes which are slippery.
- This bright and clear weather changed completely as a sign of God's anger. So he had to stop and a storm was about to blow.
- He was still hanging on the wall when the wind started to blow. The wind started hitting his ears and everything has changed in nature.

Coleridge:

* Paraphrasing:
- The poem begins with the reference to the lack of activity in life. The poet says that something is functioning in silence; the frost is doing its function in an invisible way.
- The sound of the owlet (a bird) can sometimes be heard and some other times couldn't be heard at all.
- The poet is talking about being isolated and alone.
- For the poet, this kind of silence is suitable for thinking about life.
- Near him in the room is his newly born child sleeping in his cradle peacefully.
- This total silence is disturbing his thoughts. He can't concentrate in his thinking.
- The people who live in this village are also resting.
- All the activities of life are like the ones is a dream, so they can't be heard.
- The flames of the fire in his room appears to him as something inactive.
- The poet then imagines a film on the fire and it appears to him as the only active thing in the room.
- The poet thinks that the activity of the film in this silence of nature makes this film a companion to him.
- This kind of activity of the film moves his inactive mind and makes it active.
- The coming lines explain how his mind starts to think about new things and becomes active.

- Now, the poet starts remembering the past. He says: Many times when I was in the class, I used to keep looking at the bars of the door waiting for a stranger to enter.
-  Most of the time, with open eyes, I used to have dreams while I was awake.
- The poet used to dream of the village where he was born.
- The bell sounds of the church in that village are the music of the poor. These bells used to ring all day. They are sweet sounds and the poet used to feel so much pleased when hearing these bells ringing. Even when he is in the class, he imagines the sound of these bells hitting his ears. They are an indication of something which will happen.
- When the poet remembered these sweet sound he really slept and started dreaming.
- These sounds are like a mother singing to her son to sleep.
- The next day, the poet was afraid from being asked by his teacher about what they have taken in the previous day.
- He pretended to be reading in his book just to make the teacher believe that he is busy and not make eye contact with him.
- When he hears a sound near the door, he snatches a quick look towards the door hoping to see the stranger's face.
- This stranger may be someone from the village, a relative or even a class mate.

- Now the poet returns to reality and he is talking to his sleeping baby.
- He is pleased and happy for his baby because he is going to learn in a better place from the place where the poet was brought up. But he is also jealous from his baby for the same reason.
- He says: you will learn in open places while I was brought up in a closed one. He is envying his child.
- He says that he was brought up in a closed place where he couldn't see anything beautiful except the sky and the stars.
- He again says: But you, my baby, will be able to move from one place to another like the breeze of air. He is speaking about freedom.
- He lists the beautiful elements of nature where his baby may move among.
- The clouds are like a mirror which reflects the beautiful elements of nature.
- This child will have two kinds of pleasure: Hearing and seeing.
- The child will learn there the eternal language of nature.
- According to the poet, the language of nature is the eternal language of God. It represents the dignifying of nature by the Romantics.
- God is teaching us this language from the beginning of life.
- The poet addresses nature as a great universal teacher.
- Nature shall build the character and personality of his son, and his son will be able to use what he is given to help others in his life.

- Now the poet is telling his son that he is going to enjoy all the seasons in the village.
- He says: you will enjoy the four seasons of the year.
- You will enjoy the greenness in the season of summer.
- you will also enjoy the scene of the bird which is sitting on the snow on the bare branches of the tree.
- The poet then speaks about the beautiful scene of the melting snow when the sun rises.
- you will also enjoy the sound of the rain that can be heard during the storm.
- The frost will turn the drops of water that are falling down something into ice which will make a beautiful scene and these drops of water will shine to the moon silently.
