Chapter ten:
I will say what are the most important things , so you have to return to the book if you doctor say any thing more.
Stress in Simple Words
1- The nature of stress:
What are the main factors which make the stressed syllable prominent?
1- loudness.
2- Length.
3- Pitch.
4- Quality
2- Levels of stress:
Read from the second paragraph{ Let us begin….} to {…in this course.} page 96.
3- Placement of stress within the word:
Read page 97 :
What are the things which we have ti make use of in order to decide on stress placement?
1,2,3, and4.
Then read in page 97 from {it is…} to page 98 {….examples of strong syllables are…}.
Now:
Two –syllable words:
In verbs:
Usually the second syllable is stressed.
- If the second syllable is strong, then it is stressed and the first syllable is weak:
Eg: apply.
- If the second syllable is weak , the first syllable is stressed:
Eg: enter.
- Also, the second syllable is unstressed if it contains /schwaU/:
Eg: follow.
- We treat two –syllable simple adjectives in the same way:
Eg: even.
- You have to pay your attention that if the first syllable 'I' is weak, we put the stress on the second syllable:
Eg: divine.
In nouns:
- Usually the first syllable is stressed.
- If the first syllable is stressed, then the second syllable is weak:
Eg: money.
- If the first syllable is weak, then the second syllable is stressed:
Eg: estate.
Three –syllable words:
In verbs:
- If the final syllable is strong , then it is stressed:
Eg: entertain.
- If the final one is weak , then the preceding one is stressed:
Eg: encounter.
- If both of them are weak , then the first one is stressed:
Eg: parody.
In nouns:
- If the final syllable is weak or ends with /schwaU/, then it is unstressed and the preceding one is stressed:
Eg: mimosa.
- If both of them are weak, then the first syllable is stressed:
Eg: quantity.
Adjectives are the same:
Eg: opportune.
These are the chapters which your doctor wants as I know.
There are also two chapters which are 15 and 18 , those are the chapters that Doctor Talal gives us, and I will put them for you all for the next section on the holiday , God willing.
Don’t forget that I put the most important things in every chapter , and you have to return to the book if you doctor gave you any thing more.
If there is any question about any chapter, put you question here, and I will answer you before your exam.
Finally, I wish from every one reads those lessons and gets a benefit from them his prayers for me with the good.
God help us…
My best wishes for all….
