I. Comment on Two of the following passages: (10 lines, 25 marks, Each)
A. "They are all so busy playing the ugly duckling ... And I don't feel a bit like a humble and ugly duckling. I do feel like a swan among geese - I can't help it. They make one feel so. And I don't care what they think of me."
B. "It's a shock. But I don't feel it very much, really. I don't feel any different. We've all got to die, and it doesn't seem to make any great difference, anyhow, whether you die or not. I can't feel any grief, you know. It leaves me cold."
C. "This man suffered too much. He hated all this, and somehow he couldn't get away. When I had a chance I begged him to try and leave while there was time."
D. "He hated sometimes the idea of being taken away - and then again ... But I don't understand these matters. I am a simple man. He thought it would scare you away – that you would give it up, thinking him dead."
II. Examine only One of the following subjects: (50 marks)
1. Heart of Darkness and Women in Love as novels that tell of a kind of oscillation between animalism and spiritual truth.
2. Heart of Darkness and Women in Love as novels that promote reform.
3. Heart of Darkness and Women in Love demonstrate that Man cannot triumph over the atavistic temptations of the corrupted society he tries to redeem and reform.
4. Heart of Darkness and Women in Love deal with the idea of ‘Fidelity and Betrayal’.
