These are two different English translations of very early ( pre-Islamic) Arabic poetry . The two translators use very differnt interpretations of the same poem . This translation is by Sir Charles Lyall, who had studied many ancient languages, including ancient Chineses and Persian poetry , before he started on these old Arabic poems . Here he kept the original metre, but he did not rhyme the poem and used blank verse instead.
O friend - see the lightning there! it flickered, and now is gone,
as though flashed a pair of hands in the pillar of crowned cloud.
Nay, was its blaze, or the lamps of a hermit that dwells alone,
and pours o'er the twisted wicks the oil from his slender curse?
