[englishtext] First of all I know that the doctor of this subject is changed, but I will continue because the chapters have essential rules which I will concentrate on.
The eighth chapter:
The Syllable
Some notes: In this chapter you have to know: 1- How to transcribe the word correctly. 2- Then where there is the peak which has to be a vowel. 3- The consonant which are before the peak is onset and after the peak is coda. 4- Finally you have to specify the pre-initial, initial, post initial , final, post final…etc. 5- Pay attention if there is a zero onset or a zero coda or not.
1- Minimum syllable: it is a single vowel in isolation. It is preceded and followed by silence. Eg: are/a:/, err/3:/, and or. Besides, /m/: which we sometimes produce to indicate agreement. /S/: which we sometimes produce to ask for silence.
2- Onset syllables: That have more than just silence preceding the centre of the syllable. Eg: bar/ba:/, key/ki:/, and more.
3- Coda syllables: which have no onset but have a coda. Eg: am/aem/, ease/i:z/, and ought.
4- Some syllables have onset and coda: Eg: sat/saet/, fill/fIl/, and run.
Phonotactics: They are the study of the possible phoneme combinations of a language. *No word begins with more than three consonants. It can begin with a vowel , or with one , two , or three consonants. *No word ends with more than four consonants. It can end with a vowel , or with one , two , three , or four consonants.
Consonant cluster: means two or more consonants together. Zero onset: when there is no consonant at the beginning of the word. In other words, when the word begins with vowel{peak}. Zero coda: when there is no consonant at the end of the word.
Dr.Talal gave us this diagram I hope it will be useful:
One consonant cluster: -Initial sound {All except the sound which is in 'ing' and in measure}.
Two consonant cluster: -Pre initial {s} + initial { p,t,k,f,m,n}. -Initial {p,t,k.,b,d,g,f,'th' like in thin, s,'S' like in ship, h,v,m,n,l}. Three consonant cluster: Pre initial {s} + initial {p,t,k} + post initial {l,r,w,j}.
One consonant cluster: Final{any consonant}.
Two consonant cluster: -Pre final {m,n,the sound which is in 'ing' , l,s} + final{any consonant}. -Final{any consonant} +post final {s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin}.
Three consonant cluster:-Pre final{m,n,the sound which is in 'ing' , l,s} + final{any consonant} + post final{s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin}. -Final{ any consonant} + post final [1] {s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin} + post final [2] {s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin}.
Four consonant cluster:- Pre final{m,n,the sound which is in 'ing' , l,s} + final{any consonant} + post final [1] {s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin} + post final [2] {s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin}. - Final{ any consonant} + post final [1] {s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin} + post final [2] {s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin} + post final [3] {s,z,t,d, 'th' like in thin}.
Examples: 1- Squealed: s k w i: l d Pre initial initial post initial peak pre final final Onset Coda
2- Ease: i: z Zero onsetpeak final
Coda
3- few: f j u: initial post initial peak Zero coda Onset
If there is any question, just ask me….
