msan,
As for prose:
The first part of the questions is not just silly questions; it may either be silly questions only, quotations only or a mixture of silly questions and quotations.
As for prose, I will give you a detailed summary of what the doctor said:
In the exam you will have three questions:
1- You have a passage that is taken from a poem we have studied. In this extract you are expected to do the following:
• You mention the name of the poet.
• You mention the title of the poem.
• You paraphrase the extract. You should say: In these lines, the poem says …….etc. That is you translate the poem from poetry to prose in your own words but confined yourself to the extract. Do not analyze anything here in the first paragraph. Then in the next paragraph you analyze the extract you are given. Analyzing means that if you find any school we have studied and which has an influence on these lines and it is textually clear you mention that. It is not enough to just mention the school, you also have to say where this influence is; you should explain by saying something small about this school and then show the influence of this school. Analyzing also means that if there is any figure of speech in the extract you should mention it and discuss it with definition. Analyzing means to show if there is any technique by the poet as well. To analyze means also to mention whether the lines you are given reflect any theme or not. It also means that you have to mention something about the character or something about the life of the author if we have discussed it. After the analysis there should be a small conclusion in which you sum up what you said earlier; it could be one sentence only.
2- This question will be controversial a bit. It is going to a definition question; you have terms and you are required to define them with a minimum of one sentence. You will be either asked to define the term only, or you will be asked to define the term and give an example, and the example is just a reference.
3- This is a general question. You will find two questions here; A & B and you should answer only one. In this question there will be no extract to discuss but you will be asked to discuss a poem as a whole. This general question might be about one poem or more than one. If it is about one poem the aspect you are required to discuss will be defined, for example; themes, structure, characters, etc. Either you will be given both the aspect required and the poem, or just the aspect and you will be free to choose the poem. However, if it is more than one poem you will be given the aspect to discuss in two poems; these poems will be defined or not. Of course the answer to this question should be in the form of an essay; minimum three paragraphs.
