On Defining Terms

Introduction: Within the realm of literary criticism or even literary history, there are some terms which require attention. Of course there are dictionaries of literary terms and companions to English and American literature, and there are companions to world literature. Within these reference books, we find definitions of literary and critical terms, such as drama, tragedy, dramatic irony and characterization. Without these reference books; it would be extremely difficult to appreciate these terms and their critical implications.

1. The adjective "Gothic" indicates to something "ugly" in:
A. the 17th century
B. the 18th century
C. the 19th century
D. none of the above.

2. In the 18th century, the adjective "Gothic" denotes to:
A. something which is not practiced by fashionable people
                B. old fashioned
C. something associated with melancholy and nostalgia
D. all of the above.

3. Neo-classical writers refer to the term of "Nature" as
A. a source of imitation
B. a source of inspiration
C. both A & B
D. neither A nor B.

4. In his 'Essay on Criticism' , Pope equated "Nature" with
A. common sense
B. reason
C. the universal
D. all of the above.

5. For the Romantics 'Nature' meant
A. source of inspiration
B. source of individual inspiration and revelation
C. source of imitation
D. none of the above.

Conclusion: We can summarize this chapter in four points:
1.There are terms that may change in meaning in different eras. Example: the term "Gothic" means ugly in the 17th century while it means "old fashioned" later in the 18th century.
2.Terms may mean different things within the same era . Example: the term "Nature" in poetry has changed its meaning from Neo-classical school to Romantic school.
3.Terms that may have different meanings in different countries. Example: the term "Romanticism" didn't mean the same sense in European countries; English Romanticism differs from French.
4.Terms that may mean different things to the same writer using them. Example: in Shakespeare works, you find that the term "Nature" has different meanings; it means innocence and natural goodness on the one hand, and common sense on the other.

Literary Studies          And comparative        Literary Indebtedness
(how the writer influences other writers)

Some important points:

1. The study of literary indebtedness has never given up its place as an important branch of literary research within particular literature, and especially in comparative literature.

2. Its value and validity have been so questioned that it has recently been on the defensive.

3. Some comparatists don't encourage source studies mainly because it is difficult to determine who influenced who.

4. subjects like love, jealousy and revenge are so universal that they appeal to humanity at large; it is extremely difficult to assert that one author has been indebted to another in his treatment of subject which pertains to mankind everywhere.

5. Some scholars and critics, including many who have studied literary indebtedness, seem to feel that to suggest an author's literary debt diminishes his originality which should not be understood in terms of innovation.

6. Some critics argue that an author's literary indebtedness is a sign of his weakness. However, a writer's originality and creativity cannot be assessed on the basis of innovation. Creativity and originality mainly lie in an author's specific treatment of certain subject so one should not consider a writer's literary indebtedness as an indication of his lack of originality and creativity.

7. Direct interrelationships between literatures exists in a context of the reception and popularity of an author or authors of one country to another. Here, one can see how Shakespeare's works have influenced other literatures.

8. Translation is a creative act; the translator brings to his contemporary native literary tradition a work written in another language and often at a different time.

9. Old theory and practice of translation admitted relative freedom of excision, addition, paraphrase, and change of form and often of style.

10. The old theory and practice of translation admitted some change or adaptation.

11. Within the domain of literary indebtedness, one also can explore borrowings that reveal a writer's influence on other writers. In the case of borrowings, the writer helps himself to materials or
methods, especially to aphorisms, images, figures of speech, motifs, plot elements.

The Art of Translation

1. Within the field of comparative literary studies, there have been doubts about the suitability of translation. These doubts are mainly the difficulty of translation of literary works. The question that always arises in the minds of comparatists and literary critics can be discussed as follows, can a translator accurately translate an author's thoughts, emotions, style in any literary works especially poems, plays and novels. The difficulty springs from the author's recourse to figurative language; nevertheless, there are many comparatists who view translated works as a fertile feel for comparative criticism.

2. Translation, of course, is an important activity because it serves to build a cultural bridge between nations and countries.

3. The works of Shakespeare have been translated into many languages mainly because the themes which he tackles are so universal that they appeal to humanity at life.

4.The fame of Shakespeare works paved their way into Germany where Schlegel translated some of Shakespeare's works.

5. As a translator, Schlegel was extremely faithful to Shakespearean texts. Therefore, he exerted himself to preserve Shakespeare's verse forms and he differentiated between rhetorical and conversational prose. This indicates that Schlegel, as a translator, did his utmost to reproduce the original.

6. The Schlegel translation was known as Schlegel-Tieck translation. The German translator Schlegel has translated some of Shakespeare's plays and published them in Germany. The main principle on which these translation depends on faithfulness.

7. Goethe's Faust has been translated by the American poet Bayard Taylor. This English translation is so excellent that it appears as an original work.

8. As we know Goethe's Faust is a universal drama of ambition and tragic fall. This American poet, Bayard Taylor, goes back to the sources of Faust in order to understand all the classical allusions in Greek mythology. Of course without delving into these mythological allusions, it will be extremely difficult to account for them.

9. Like Schlegel, Taylor, as a translator, displays an utter fidelity to the original work. He attempts as far as
he can to reproduce the content, the form and the rhythm of the source.

Literature and Psychology

1. Literature and Psychology have recognized that they share a concern with
A. human motivations
B. human behavior
C. man's capacity to create myths and to use symbols
D. all of the above.

2. Literature and Psychology have found themselves calling increasingly upon the knowledge derived from
A. Sigmund Freud's explorations of the psyche
B. Shklovsky's  explorations of the psyche
C. Derrida's explorations of the psyche
D. none of the above.

3. Any examination of literature and psychology must concern itself alike with the direct fertilizations of imaginative writing by psychoanalysis and the use which literary criticism and biography have made of the psychological and psychoanalytical tools.

4. Freud's writings on certain nonliterary problems served to illuminate such questions as wit and its relation to the unconscious, the concept of wish-fulfillment, the problems of neurosis and the associative character of symbols are all applicable to literary study.

5. The important concept of "regression in the service of ego" suggest that art can often serve as a creative impulse leading to unconscious "self-therapy". In addition, dreams have been shown to play a role in resolving inner conflicts and anxieties.

6. The most direct early influence of psychoanalysis on literature and literary experiment is to be found in the surrealist movement which devoted to exploring the role of the unconscious in art. The name 'surrealism' was given the concept of a marriage between dream states and reality to form an  "absolute reality".

7. Surrealism concerned itself with "tapping" the unconscious-recording of dream states.

8. Literary historians have pointed out that surrealism began as an inquiry into the involuntary poetic imagination and ended as a study of "total subjectivity".
9. Parallel to the early Freudian exploration of the role of the unconscious in art, what might be called man's inner consciousness, we find analogous explorations undertaken on the ground of literature in the so-called "stream of consciousness" or "internal monologue".

Odysseus ,

Literary criticism is excluded form the domain of comparative literature by
A. The French school
B. The American school
C. Both A & B
D. Neither A nor B

وشكرا الك مرة تانية على متابعتك و حرصك وانشالله منشوفك من المتخرجين  *ورود  *1  *1  *ورود
